Niels, Penny and Alice Verburg (AKA, the Luddites) are releasing their latest vintages. More than two decades after they established themselves in the hills of Bot River the Luddite wines are now iconic and reaping the rewards of years of dedication. They focus on making small batches and only sourcing grapes from single vineyards to let each unique terroir speak for itself.
"Is the 2022 the best ever vintage of Luddite Shiraz?"
-Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za (96/100)
In 2017, Alice started making wine alongside her father at Luddite. She is maintaining the family’s high winemaking standards. While Penny’s making sure the vineyards (and Niels) behave, all in the name of deliciousness.
The Saboteur wines are young, fresh and intriguing as ever while the Chenin Blanc and Shiraz are intense, structured, complex and layered.

Luddite 2025 Mixed Case
5% Discount + Free Delivery
This is a mixed case of the latest release wines from Luddite.
It includes:
2 bottles of Luddite ‘Saboteur’ White 2024
2 Bottles of Luddite ‘Saboteur’ Red 2022
1 Bottle of Luddite Chenin 2024
1 Bottle of Luddite Shiraz 2022
A significant portion of the Chenin Blanc and some of the Viognier benefit from 10 days of skin contact, giving structure and tannin to the wine. Aged in older oak barrels and a portion of Chenin goes into steel tanks for primary fruit notes.
“The nose bursts with honeysuckle, tropical fruit, orange, peach, apricot, hay, and herbal nuances. The palate is rich and textured, yet balanced, with tangy acidity providing drive (alcohol: 12.37%). A gently pithy finish enhances its food-friendly appeal. 93/100”
The Cabernet, Grenache Noir and Mourvèdre were all fermented in small batches in open bins. While the Shiraz went into steel tanks. All components were pressed directly to barrel and aged separately for 12 months.
“Heady aromatics of cranberry, cassis, floral perfume, and some herbal nuances, alongside hints of cured meat, pepper, and spice. The palate shows concentrated fruit matched by bright acidity and crunchy tannins. Not the product of winemaking that plays it safe or strives for precision, but rather one that is thoughtfully crafted and undeniably compelling. 93/100”
Bot River (Only from fruit grown at Luddite Farm)
100% Chenin Blanc
This year’s Chenin saw longer skin contact in open fermenters, enhancing texture and weight.
“30% left on the skins for 30 days, then matured for 12 months in old oak. The nose intrigues with citrus, stone fruit, potpourri, cinnamon, and ginger, along with a subtle waxy complexity. The palate is lean yet flavourful – tightly wound with punchy acidity and a dry, lightly grippy finish. 94/100”
Bot River (Only from fruit grown at Luddite Farm)
100% Shiraz
Special attention was paid to the temperature of the grapes during fermentation, a slow steady ferment ensures bigger fruit expression and more time on skins helps intensifying the structure.
“Matured for 24 months in barrel, 15% new. Classic aromas of black berries, lavender, fynbos, olive, pepper, and spice. The palate is succulent and sappy, where pure fruit meets vibrant acidity and crunchy tannins. Beautifully balanced and finely detailed – while Luddite Shiraz is often bold and burly, this vintage is expertly judged, whilst not becoming too delicate or restrained. 96/100″
